Biomedical research belongs to the key activities of the Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics (ÚLBLD). Besides the research teams in the individual laboratories, research activities of the specialized labs (Hepatology Lab, Laboratory for Special Immunochemistry, Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Laboratory of gastroenterology, Laboratory for Lipid Research, Laboratory for Atherosclerosis Research) were integrated into Central Research Laboratories of the ÚLBLD. This step enabled to intensify and extend collaboration among the research teams as well as other clinical groups. The major scientific activities cover the fields of novel diagnostic markers, molecular diagnostics of cancer, cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, as well as oxidative stress-mediated conditions. There are 14 senior researchers having PhD promotor status in the branch of Biochemistry and Pathobiochemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology, currently, more than 50 PhD students are doing their PhD studies here. The quality of the research at the Institute is reflected by the publication activities – in 2011, more than 90 original papers were published with more than 1000 citations of previous paper were achieved in this year. With these quantitative data, ÚLBLD belongs to the premier research Institutes of the 1^st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague.
